Melanotan 2 Dosage Calculator: Reconstitution & Syringe Units
This Melanotan 2 dosage calculator reads three numbers and gives back a syringe reading: how many mg the vial holds, how much bac water went in, and the amount you want to convert. Out come the strength, the volume to draw, and the marks to read on a U-100 insulin syringe. Melanotan 2, also sold as MT-2 or Melanotan II, is not an approved medicine, so the tool never picks an amount for you.
Melanotan 2 calculator: vial, water and amount
Type the vial size from the label, the water you put in, and an amount in mg. The amount box starts empty on purpose, because no study gives a dose for a reader to copy. If your figure is in micrograms, divide it by 1,000 first: 1,000 mcg is 1 mg.

How do you turn mg of Melanotan 2 into syringe units?
The tool does three quick sums. Every step is a single divide or multiply, which a phone calculator can redo.
- Strength: the vial mg divided by the mL of water. The answer is mg in each mL.
- Volume: take your mg amount and divide it by the strength. That gives the mL to draw.
- Units: multiply the mL by 100, since a U-100 syringe packs 100 units into each mL.
Take a 10 mg vial mixed with 2 mL, and use 1 mg as a round test figure, not a dose:
10 mg / 2 mL = 5 mg per mL
1 mg / 5 mg per mL = 0.2 mL
0.2 mL x 100 = 20 units
At that strength, each single unit holds 0.05 mg, or 50 mcg. Keep that one figure in mind and you can check any reading by hand. This page uses U-100 math only, the scale most insulin syringes are printed with. For more practice turning mL into units, see our mL to units guide.

How much bac water should a 10 mg Melanotan 2 vial get?
No study and no label sets a water volume for Melanotan 2. Water sets the strength of the liquid. The amount of peptide in the glass stays the same whatever volume you add. Less water packs more peptide into each unit. More water spreads the same amount across more marks, which makes small amounts easier to read.
| Water added | Strength | One unit holds | 1 mg reads as |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 mL | 10 mg per mL | 0.1 mg (100 mcg) | 10 units (0.1 mL) |
| 2 mL | 5 mg per mL | 0.05 mg (50 mcg) | 20 units (0.2 mL) |
| 3 mL | 3.33 mg per mL | 0.033 mg (33 mcg) | 30 units (0.3 mL) |
| 5 mL | 2 mg per mL | 0.02 mg (20 mcg) | 50 units (0.5 mL) |
The same vial, read the other way round. These are round amounts picked to show the pattern:
| Amount you already have | With 2 mL | With 5 mL |
|---|---|---|
| 0.1 mg (100 mcg) | 2 units | 5 units |
| 0.25 mg (250 mcg) | 5 units | 12.5 units |
| 0.5 mg (500 mcg) | 10 units | 25 units |
| 1 mg | 20 units | 50 units |
| 2 mg | 40 units | 100 units, one full 1 mL syringe |
Disclaimer: the rows above convert round numbers into units for one vial size. None of them is a dose, and none comes from a study.
Its FDA label describes bac water as sterile water carrying a little benzyl alcohol, 0.9% or 1.1%, in a vial meant for many draws. Whether it needs the fridge is a separate question, which our bac water storage FAQ answers.

What doses did the Melanotan 2 studies use?
Three small studies from the University of Arizona gave Melanotan 2 to men in the 1990s: a pilot safety study published by Dorr and colleagues in 1996, and two erection studies published by Wessells and colleagues in 1998 and 2000. Each set the amount per kg of body weight, and none ran a long loading and maintenance plan: the pilot gave five shots in two weeks, and the erection studies gave single shots on test days. These are the figures as each abstract states them:
| Amount | Schedule | Route | Who | Study |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.01 mg per kg at first, raised in 0.005 mg per kg steps to 0.025 or 0.03 mg per kg | Every other weekday for 2 weeks, with salt water on the days between | Under the skin | People: 3 healthy men | Dorr and colleagues, 1996 |
| 0.025 mg per kg | One shot per test session, swapped with a placebo session | Injection; the abstract does not name the site | People: 10 men with erectile problems of no known physical cause | Wessells and colleagues, 1998 |
| 0.025 mg per kg | Given twice, and a placebo given twice, in random order | Under the skin | People: 10 men with erectile problems and physical risk factors | Wessells and colleagues, 2000 |
Disclaimer: these are amounts that three tiny studies gave to men under study conditions. They are not a dose for you, Melanotan 2 has no approved dose, and any decision about a dose sits with a licensed clinician.
Per kg means the amount grows with body weight. Using the 2000 study figure, a 70 kg man would work out as:
0.025 mg x 70 kg = 1.75 mg, which is 35 units at 5 mg per mL
Disclaimer: this turns a study figure into units to show how per kg math works. It is not a target, and the study men were watched by researchers the whole time.

Does a 10 mg Melanotan 2 vial really hold 10 mg?
Not always. A hospital lab in Denmark bought Melanotan 2 vials from three online shops and measured them. Every shop said its vials held 10 mg. The lab found 4.32 to 8.84 mg per vial, and vials from two of the shops also carried 4.1 to 5.9% unknown impurities.
Every calculator, this one included, trusts the label. So when a vial holds less than it says, every draw holds less than the screen shows, by the same share: a vial holding 43% of its label gives draws holding 43% of the figure on screen. The table runs the lab figures:
| Real content of the vial | A reading the calculator calls 1 mg holds |
|---|---|
| 10 mg, the label is right | 1 mg |
| 8.84 mg, the fullest vial in the test | 0.88 mg |
| 4.32 mg, the emptiest vial in the test | 0.43 mg |
When a test result gives a net content in mg for the vial, that figure matches the glass, so it is the one the calculator needs as the vial size. The label figure is only a claim.
What side effects did the studies and reviews report?
In the 1996 pilot, mild nausea showed up at most dose levels. At the top level, 0.03 mg per kg, one of the two men who reached it had moderate sleepiness and tiredness. Bouts of stretching and yawning came with erections that lasted 1 to 5 hours after a shot.
Disclaimer: 0.03 mg per kg is the highest amount that pilot tried in three healthy men, named here only because of what it caused. It is not an amount for anyone to use.
In the 1998 study, nausea, stretching, yawning and less appetite were more common than with placebo, and none of them needed treatment. In the 2000 study, 4 of the 19 Melanotan 2 shots were followed by severe nausea.
Skin doctors have also published case reports of moles that changed, and new moles that appeared, after people used unregulated melanotan. Four reports describe a melanoma growing out of an existing mole. A 2017 review says these reports do not prove that melanotan caused the changes.
The FDA lists Melanotan 2 among substances that may carry serious risks when used in compounding. Its note cites case reports of melanoma, a brain swelling syndrome known as PRES, a stimulant-like toxic reaction, and priapism, an erection that will not go away.

Is Melanotan 2 the same as Melanotan 1?
No. They are two different molecules. Melanotan 1 is listed in PubChem under the drug name afamelanotide, and a 2017 review calls afamelanotide the only member of this group approved for use, in a small number of medical conditions. Melanotan 2 never went through that process, so its math has no approved label behind it.
Our Melanotan 1 vs 2 guide sets the two side by side, and the nasal tanning spray guide covers the sprayed versions. For what MT-2 is and how it acts on the body, read the Melanotan II profile. Melanotan 2 weighs 1,024.2 g per mol, per its PubChem record.

How to mix a Melanotan 2 vial
These steps cover the vial only: turning the powder into a liquid the calculator can describe. They say nothing about how much to use, and this page gives no injection steps. Whether and how anyone injects is a question for a licensed clinician.
- Read the label. Find the mg printed on the Melanotan 2 vial. That figure is the vial size the calculator asks for.
- Wipe both stoppers. Wipe the rubber tops on the MT-2 vial and the bac water vial with alcohol pads, then let them air dry.
- Measure the water. Pull your chosen volume of bac water into a clean syringe and note the mL, because it sets the strength.
- Let it run down the glass. Push the needle through the stopper and aim the stream at the inside wall, so the water does not hit the powder hard.
- Swirl until clear. Roll the vial gently between your fingers until no powder is left. Skip shaking, which can whip the liquid into foam.
- Mark the strength. Write the date and the mg per mL from the calculator on the vial, so later readings use the same numbers.
None of the three studies above reports how long a mixed vial keeps, so this page gives no shelf life for it.

Common questions
How many units is 1 mg of Melanotan 2?+
That depends on the water you added. Mixed as 10 mg in 2 mL, 1 mg fills 0.2 mL and reads 20 units. With 5 mL in the same vial, 1 mg takes 0.5 mL, or 50 units.
How much bac water goes in a 10 mg Melanotan 2 vial?+
No study or label sets a volume. The water only changes how strong the liquid is. 2 mL makes 5 mg per mL, and 5 mL makes 2 mg per mL, which spreads a small amount over more marks so it is easier to read.
Is there an approved Melanotan 2 dose?+
No. Melanotan 2 is not an approved medicine in any country we know of. The human dose figures we found come from three small studies in men, published from 1996 to 2000, and each one was set per kg of body weight.
Why does the mg on the label matter so much?+
The calculator divides by it, so a wrong label makes every reading wrong. In one lab test, vials sold as 10 mg held 4.32 to 8.84 mg. A reading the calculator called 1 mg would have held 0.43 to 0.88 mg from those vials.
Can I type micrograms into the calculator?+
Type mg. To turn micrograms into mg, divide by 1,000. So 1,000 mcg is 1 mg, and 100 mcg is 0.1 mg.
Does this calculator tell me what dose to use?+
No. It turns numbers you bring into mL and units, and that is all. It does not choose an amount, test what is in your vial, or say whether anyone should use Melanotan 2.
