Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide derived from the N-terminal fragment of ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone). It was developed in Russia and is approved as a nootropic and neuroprotective medication in Russia and Ukraine, where it is sold over the counter in pharmacies.
Unlike many peptides that are primarily injectable, Semax is typically administered intranasally (as a nasal spray) — the nasal route allows it to bypass the blood-brain barrier and reach the central nervous system directly. This makes it uniquely effective as a brain-targeted peptide.
Semax has one of the strongest effects on BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) of any known substance — studies show it can increase BDNF levels by up to 8-fold. BDNF is the 'fertilizer of the brain' responsible for neuronal growth, plasticity, and protection.

Neuroprotection: Semax activates protective mechanisms in the brain including antioxidant enzymes and anti-inflammatory pathways, reducing neuronal damage from stress and ischemia.
NGF Stimulation: Beyond BDNF, Semax also stimulates NGF (Nerve Growth Factor), supporting peripheral nerve health and regeneration.
