Is Zepbound the Same as Mounjaro? Same Drug, Two Labels
Is Zepbound the same as Mounjaro? Yes, both FDA labels say they contain the same medicine, tirzepatide, sold by Lilly in the same six strengths. The difference is what each US label approves it for: Zepbound for weight and sleep apnea, Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes.
This page compares the two labels line by line. It also covers compounded tirzepatide and how semaglutide drugs like Ozempic differ.
Are Zepbound and Mounjaro the same drug?
Yes. The two FDA labels list the same active ingredient, the same strengths and the same marketer, but different approved uses.
Both labels name Lilly USA, LLC as the marketer, part of Eli Lilly and Company. So the same company sells the one medicine under two names.

Does Mounjaro have the same active ingredient as Zepbound?
Yes. Both FDA labels open by naming tirzepatide as the active ingredient.
- The Zepbound label says it contains tirzepatide, a GIP receptor and GLP-1 receptor agonist.
- The Mounjaro label says it contains tirzepatide, a once weekly GIP receptor and GLP-1 receptor agonist.
An agonist is a drug that switches a receptor on. GIP and GLP-1 are two hormone receptors. For more on how tirzepatide works, see our tirzepatide profile.

What is the difference between Zepbound and Mounjaro?
The approved use. In the US, the Zepbound label covers weight and sleep apnea, and the Mounjaro label covers type 2 diabetes.
- Zepbound: to reduce excess body weight and keep it off long term in adults with obesity, or adults with overweight and at least one weight-related health problem. It also treats moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity.
- Mounjaro (US): along with diet and exercise, to improve blood sugar control in adults and children 10 and older with type 2 diabetes.
Europe is different. The EU product information says Mounjaro is approved, along with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity, for weight management in adults. That includes weight loss and keeping weight off. So in the EU, one brand covers weight use too.

Is compound tirzepatide the same as Zepbound?
No, says the FDA: compounded drugs are not FDA approved, even when they contain the same ingredient.
The FDA says it does not review compounded drugs for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are sold.
The FDA also lists warning signs for people buying through telehealth sites. One is a company that makes claims such as the compounded drug is the same as an FDA-approved drug. For more on this, see how to spot fake GLP-1.
Are Ozempic and Zepbound the same?
No. The Ozempic label says Ozempic contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, while Zepbound contains tirzepatide, which acts on both GIP and GLP-1.

What is the difference between tirzepatide and semaglutide in terms of weight loss?
In the SURMOUNT-5 head to head trial, the average weight change at week 72 was -20.2% with tirzepatide and -13.7% with semaglutide.
Is tirzepatide way better than semaglutide? That one trial favoured tirzepatide on weight, but a trial average is not a promise for any one person. In SURMOUNT-5, the most common side effects in both groups were stomach and gut problems. Most were mild to moderate, and most came during dose increases.
