Q: Is skin elasticity the same measurement as skin tightening?

No, and the difference decides how to read a percentage. Elasticity in these papers is a suction reading taken on a patch of skin about the size of a fingertip. Visible laxity is graded from photographs of a whole region such as a jawline. A study that moved a suction reading on a cheek patch has reported that reading.

Q: Why do percentages from similar products differ so much in size?

Usually because they were measured against different things. A percentage against a vehicle control shows what the active added on top of the base cream, as in the vehicle controlled split face sericin study (PMID 25940759). A percentage against baseline carries everything else that happened during the study, including the moisturising base, as in the open label periorbital study with no vehicle arm (PMID 39788697). What Gets Measured

A Cutometer applies suction to a patch of skin about the size of a fingertip and reports how far it travels and how completely it returns, as R2, R5 or R7. Firmness comes from a compression device or from trained graders scoring photographs. Dermal density comes from high frequency ultrasound. Visible laxity comes from graded photography or pixel analysis of a whole region such as a jawline. Population matters as much as instrument: a reading in healthy adults in their twenties is not a reading in women in their sixties.

Oral Collagen Peptides

In the 2023 meta-analysis, subgroup analyses found collagen source and duration changed the hydration effect, while elasticity showed no significant subgroup difference by source at p equals 0.21 or by measurement method at p equals 0.06. Its authors ask for further large scale randomised trials. Watch the comparator in the X-Hyp trial: it ran against a normal collagen hydrolysate rather than a placebo, so its R2 and R7 movement compares two peptide preparations (PMID 37970760). 2.5 g or 5.0 g of collagen hydrolysate once daily for 8 weeks (PMID 23949208). 1000 mg of low molecular weight collagen peptide once daily for 12 weeks (PMID 29949889). 5 g of collagen peptides or hydrolysate once daily for 42 days (PMID 37970760).

Topicals, and What Silk Means on a Label

Silk peptide on a package can refer to hydrolysed fibroin, to sericin, or to a name attached to neither, and the sericin complex in the 2015 study also contained niacinamide and Signaline, so the design measured the complex. Argireline is patterned from the N-terminal end of SNAP-25 with a proposed mechanism of interfering with vesicle docking, which addresses lines produced by muscle movement, as does SNAP-8. GHK-Cu and Copper Peptides

A 2015 review in BioMed Research International states that in cosmetic products GHK has been found to tighten loose skin and improve elasticity, skin density and firmness, and reduce fine lines, wrinkles and photodamage. Its author affiliation reads Skin Biology, Research and Development Department, Bellevue, Washington, and it is a narrative review rather than a controlled study (PMID 26236730). A 2025 review of topically applied GHK reports a calculated partition coefficient of minus 2.24 and a charge at physiological pH for free GHK, properties that restrict passage through the stratum corneum, and concludes that GHK-Cu and Pal-GHK are effective and relatively skin permeable (PMID 39963574). Growth Hormone and GHRH Analogues

Secretagogues reach skin through a chain of reasoning: they raise growth hormone, growth hormone raises IGF-1, IGF-1 supports collagen. A 1990 trial reported a skin thickness rise of 7.1 percent at P equals 0.07, printed beside three other percentage changes in the same paper that cleared P less than 0.05. A 1997 GHRH analogue trial measured skin thickness with calipers at four sites and reported a significant rise in both genders. A 1991 trial measured wound healing, and full thickness wounds closed more slowly on growth hormone than on placebo. Approximately 0.03 mg of biosynthetic human growth hormone per kilogram of body weight, subcutaneously three times a week for six months (PMID 2355952). 10 micrograms of [Nle27]GHRH(1-29)NH2 per kilogram of body weight, self injected subcutaneously nightly for 16 weeks (PMID 9141536).

After fast weight loss on a GLP-1 medicine the question is partly how much skin is present relative to the volume underneath it. A 2026 article in Dermatologic Surgery, written by authors all affiliated with Kenvue Brands LLC, summarises preclinical and clinical work on a micropeptide called AP31 and reports improvements in firmness, elasticity, jawline definition, global facial lift and nasolabial folds in middle aged women, with its own conclusion stating that randomised controlled trials are warranted (PMID 42210882).
