How Long Do Peptides Take to Work? What Studies Show

How long do peptides take to work? In the studies here, the fastest measured result was 8 weeks: a 2014 collagen trial found better skin elasticity than placebo. The slowest was 68 weeks: the main semaglutide trial, in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2021, reported -14.9% body weight at that point. Tesamorelin sits between, with belly fat down at 26 weeks. BPC-157 has no human timeline at all. A 2025 review found only 1 clinical study among 36.

Short answer

GLP-1 drugs (semaglutide, tirzepatide)
Months. Tirzepatide reaches steady blood levels after 4 weeks (Zepbound label). The semaglutide trial reported -14.9% body weight at week 68 (NEJM 2021).
Tesamorelin
IGF-1, a growth marker in the blood, rose as early as 13 weeks (Egrifta SV label). Belly fat fell by 26 weeks and came back after stopping (AIDS 2008).
Collagen peptides and BPC-157
Collagen skin trials ran 8 weeks to 90 days. BPC-157 has no human data on when it starts to work (HSS J 2025).

How long does each peptide class take to work?

Peptide timing in these records runs from 8 weeks for collagen (Skin Pharmacol Physiol 2014) to 68 weeks for semaglutide (NEJM 2021), and several peptides have no timing data at all. The table shows the first effect each source measured, the time point and the record. A gap in the evidence stays a gap here.

How long do GLP-1 drugs take to work?

GLP-1 drugs take months to show their main result: the Zepbound label says tirzepatide reaches steady blood levels after 4 weeks of weekly shots, and the main semaglutide trial (NEJM 2021) measured weight loss at 68 weeks. The labels also start doses low on purpose. Tirzepatide's half-life, the time for half the drug to leave the body, is about 5 to 6 days. The Wegovy label gives semaglutide a half-life of about 1 week.

The FDA labels list these starting steps:

  • Zepbound: 2.5 mg injected under the skin once weekly for 4 weeks, then increases in 2.5 mg steps after at least 4 weeks
  • Wegovy: 0.25 mg injected under the skin once weekly, then the step-up schedule in the label's Table 1

Disclaimer: this is label information, not a recommendation. Dose decisions belong with a licensed clinician.

The Wegovy label says the slow step-up lowers the risk of stomach and bowel side effects. So the first weeks are spent at low doses by design. That is one reason results are measured over long trials.

The best known semaglutide weight trial was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2021. It measured its main result at 68 weeks. Average body weight changed by -14.9% with semaglutide and -2.4% with placebo. That is a trial average, not a promise for any one person. The sources here give no week by week figure for when weight loss starts. For more, see the tirzepatide profile, the semaglutide profile and tirzepatide before and after.

How long does tesamorelin take to work?

Tesamorelin lowered deep belly fat by 26 weeks in a 2008 trial in the journal AIDS, and the Egrifta SV label says IGF-1, a growth marker in the blood, rose as early as 13 weeks. The 2008 trial gave daily tesamorelin to people with HIV. Visceral fat, the deep fat around the organs, went down, and blood fats improved.

The Egrifta SV label reports IGF-1, a growth marker in the blood. After 26 weeks, 47% of patients had IGF-1 greater than 2 standard deviation scores (SDS), a measure of how far above average it was. 36% were greater than 3 SDS. This rise was seen as early as 13 weeks.

The effect did not last. The 2008 trial reported that visceral fat came back after tesamorelin was stopped. For dosing math, see the tesamorelin calculator; for the compound, the tesamorelin profile.

How long do collagen peptides take to work for skin?

Collagen peptides improved skin elasticity after 8 weeks in a 2014 trial of 69 women (Skin Pharmacol Physiol), and a 2021 meta-analysis (Int J Dermatol) found effects on wrinkles, elasticity and moisture at 90 days. In the 2014 trial, women aged 35 to 55 took collagen or a placebo, a dummy product, once a day. Neither the women nor the researchers knew who got which. At the end, skin elasticity, or springiness, was significantly better in both collagen groups.

That 2014 trial used these daily amounts:

  • 2.5 g or 5.0 g of collagen hydrolysate, once daily, for 8 weeks

Disclaimer: these are trial amounts, not a recommendation. Decisions about supplements belong with a licensed clinician.

A 2021 meta-analysis pooled many studies. It concluded that 90 days of hydrolyzed collagen reduces skin aging. It found fewer wrinkles and better skin springiness and moisture. A 2026 meta-analysis looked at peptides taken by mouth or put on the skin. They improved moisture and brightness, mostly the ones taken by mouth. The effect on wrinkles was modest. Its abstract gives no trial lengths, so it adds no timing.

For how collagen is absorbed, see collagen peptides.

How long does BPC-157 take to work?

BPC-157 has no human timeline: a 2025 systematic review in HSS Journal found 36 studies, only 1 of them in people, and no human safety data. The other 35 were preclinical, meaning in animals or cells. Safety studies in animals showed no harm across several organ systems.

The review says the liver breaks BPC-157 down, with a half-life under 30 minutes. The kidneys clear it. The review also describes a look back at knee injections. 7 of 12 patients with long-term knee pain said relief lasted more than 6 months. That is how long relief lasted, as patients recalled it. It is not how fast it started.

Online "week 1, week 4" BPC-157 timelines are not drawn from any human trial in these sources. For what has been studied, see the BPC-157 profile.

Peptides with no published timing data

No published timing exists in these sources for sermorelin, ipamorelin, CJC-1295, TB-500 or GHK-Cu: no label and no human trial on when they start to work was found. Any timeline you see online for them is not backed by a source here.

A 2026 review sorts performance peptides into levels of evidence. The top level has trials good enough for drug approval. The bottom level has no human studies at all. Timing data follow the same split. Peptides with labels and big trials have measured timelines. The rest do not. For side effects across these compounds, see peptide side effects.

Why peptide timing differs so much

Peptide timing differs because of how long each drug stays in the body, how the dose is started and what the study measured: semaglutide's half-life is about 1 week (Wegovy label), while BPC-157's is under 30 minutes (HSS J 2025). The three points below explain the spread.

  • Time in the body. Semaglutide's half-life is about 1 week and tirzepatide's about 5 to 6 days. BPC-157's, per the 2025 review, is under 30 minutes.
  • Dose start. GLP-1 labels start low and step up every few weeks, so full doses come later by design.
  • What was measured. A blood marker (IGF-1 at 13 weeks) moves before a body change (visceral fat at 26 weeks), and skin elasticity was measured at 8 weeks.

Common questions

How long does tirzepatide take to work?+

The Zepbound label says tirzepatide reached steady blood levels after 4 weeks of weekly shots. It raises the dose in steps of at least 4 weeks. The label sources here give no week by week table of when weight loss starts.

How long does semaglutide take to work for weight loss?+

The main trial ran for 68 weeks. In the 2021 New England Journal of Medicine trial, average body weight changed by -14.9% at week 68 with semaglutide. It changed by -2.4% with placebo. The sources here give no figure for the first weeks.

How long does tesamorelin take to work?+

A 2008 trial in the journal AIDS gave daily tesamorelin to people with HIV. After 26 weeks, deep belly fat was down and blood fats were better. The Egrifta SV label says IGF-1, a blood growth marker, rose as early as 13 weeks.

What happens when you stop tesamorelin?+

The same 2008 trial reported that visceral fat came back after tesamorelin was stopped.

How long does collagen take to work for skin?+

Studies ran 8 weeks to 90 days. A 2014 trial gave 69 women collagen daily for 8 weeks. Their skin was springier than with placebo at the end. A 2021 meta-analysis found 90 days of hydrolyzed collagen reduced wrinkles and improved skin springiness and moisture.

How long does BPC-157 take to work?+

There is no human timeline. A 2025 review found 36 BPC-157 studies. 35 were in animals or cells and only 1 in people, with no human safety data. It also describes a look back at knee injections. 7 of 12 patients said relief lasted more than 6 months. That is not the time it took to start working.

How long do sermorelin, ipamorelin, CJC-1295, TB-500 and GHK-Cu take to work?+

No label and no human trial on when they start to work was found for any of these. So no timeline can be given.
