MGF Peptide: What Mechano Growth Factor Is and the Research
MGF peptide (mechano growth factor) is a lab-made copy of the last 24 amino acids of IGF-IEb, a form of IGF-I linked to muscle remodeling, and PEG-MGF is marketed as a PEGylated form of it. In muscle cells in a dish it raised progenitor cell numbers, but a 2026 review found no peer-reviewed human studies of PEG-MGF.

Short answer
- What is MGF?
- A synthetic copy of the last 24 amino acids of one IGF-I form, called IGF-IEb.
- Does MGF work in people?
- Not known. No peer-reviewed human studies exist for PEG-MGF, and no human trial of injected MGF was found.
- What does the FDA say about PEG-MGF?
- It found no human exposure data for PEG-MGF and warns of a significant risk of immune reactions with compounded forms.
What Is MGF?
MGF, short for mechano growth factor, is a lab-made copy of a 24 amino acid piece of IGF-I. The name first belonged to a form of IGF-I gene message in muscle.
The IGF-I gene makes a few forms of messenger RNA. One form, IGF-IEb, seemed to play a part in muscle remodeling. So researchers also named it mechano growth factor.
The MGF peptide sold today is different. It is a lab-made copy of the last 24 amino acids at the end of IGF-IEb. A 2010 review says this synthetic peptide has been shown to help cells grow and survive.
There is a catch. A 2010 review notes that no peptide like this has ever been found in cells, in the fluid around them, in animal tissue or in body fluids. In other words, the body may never make this exact peptide. MGF is related to IGF-1, which you can read about on the IGF-1 LR3 profile.
Three Things Called MGF
Much of the confusion about MGF comes from one name used for three things. A study about one does not prove anything about the others.
This table keeps them apart.
| Name | What it is | What is known |
|---|---|---|
| MGF the gene message | A form of IGF-I messenger RNA (IGF-IEb) made in muscle | Rises quickly and briefly in human muscle after damaging exercise |
| MGF the lab peptide | A synthetic copy of the last 24 amino acids of IGF-IEb | Helped cells grow and survive in lab tests. No matching peptide has been found in the body. |
| PEG-MGF | MGF sold with a polyethylene glycol (PEG) chain attached | No peer-reviewed human studies. The FDA found no human exposure data. |

What the MGF Research Shows
Most of it is lab and animal work. A 2026 review says the evidence base is mostly preclinical, meaning cells and animals, and varies a lot from study to study.
Here is what the studies found, labelled by type.
In people, without giving MGF
A 2009 study took muscle samples from people after exercise that damaged their muscles. The MGF gene message rose fast and then fell. Other IGF-1 forms rose later and stayed up longer. Nobody in this study was given MGF. It shows the body makes the MGF message, not that the peptide works.
In cells in a dish
- A 2007 study found the MGF peptide raised the number of muscle progenitor cells. This held in healthy and diseased muscle. The paper names ALS and dystrophic muscle.
- A 2011 study found it helped human muscle stem cells from newborns and young adults keep dividing longer. It did not do this for cells from older adults.
- A 2010 study found a synthetic MGF peptide made human prostate cancer cells grow faster. This is a lab result, but it is one reason for caution.
In animals
A 2010 review says MGF and a short version of it have been tested in animals as possible treatments for muscular dystrophy and for brain injury caused by low oxygen.
Cell and animal findings only. None of these results has been tested in people given MGF.

What Is PEG-MGF?
PEG-MGF is marketed as MGF with a polyethylene glycol (PEG) chain attached. This process is called PEGylation.
The PEG chain matters. A 2026 review warns that PEGylation changes how the body handles the peptide and where it ends up. So results seen with plain MGF, or with the natural IGF-1 forms, cannot be assumed to apply to PEG-MGF.
That same review ranked growth hormone pathway peptides by their evidence. PEG-MGF sits in the lowest tier, tier D, with IGF-1 LR3 and CJC-1295 without DAC. The review says these have no peer-reviewed human studies. They rest only on lab and animal results and on user stories from outside the medical literature.
Possible Benefits: Research Ideas Only
For MGF, the possible benefits are research ideas, not proven effects. Lab work points to muscle repair, because a 2007 study saw MGF raise muscle progenitor cells in a dish.
Animal work points to muscular dystrophy and brain injury from low oxygen.
None of this has been shown in people. For the broader question of growth hormone peptide therapy, the 2026 review puts several popular options in its lowest evidence tier. For a wider comparison, see HGH vs peptides and peptides for muscle growth.

Safety and Side Effects
Its safety in people is unknown. The US FDA says it has not found any human exposure data for drug products with PEG-MGF, by any route.
It also says compounded PEG-MGF may pose a significant risk of immune reactions for some routes. It notes possible problems with impurities and with confirming what the ingredient is.
The 2026 review lists side effects reported across the whole group of growth hormone pathway peptides. These are for the group, not measured for MGF:
- Hormone and blood sugar changes, including higher prolactin and cortisol, and appetite changes
- Fluid retention
- Muscle and joint pain
- Injection site reactions
In a 2010 lab study, a synthetic MGF peptide made prostate cancer cells grow faster. What that means for people is not known.

Injection Route: Forum Reports Only
No medical source gives an injection site or a dose for MGF. The only figures on record come from bodybuilding forums.
A 2026 review quotes them as an example of how people use PEG-MGF outside of research. As reported by that review, forum users describe:
PEG-MGF, under the skin (SC) or into muscle (IM), 200 to 400 µg, 2 to 3 times a week after exercise

MGF and Drug Testing in Sport
A 2014 paper on doping tests states that MGF, or its class of substances, has been prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) since 2005. We could not retrieve the current WADA list itself, so this line rests on that paper.
Common Questions
What is MGF?+
MGF stands for mechano growth factor. The name was first given to IGF-IEb, a form of IGF-I messenger RNA linked to muscle remodeling. The MGF peptide sold today is a lab-made copy of the last 24 amino acids of that IGF-I form. It is a research compound, and no human trial of it was found.
What is PEG-MGF?+
PEG-MGF is marketed as MGF with a polyethylene glycol chain attached. A 2026 review warns that adding PEG changes how the body handles the peptide, so lab results for plain MGF cannot be assumed to apply to PEG-MGF. The FDA says it has found no human exposure data for PEG-MGF by any route.
Are peptides safer than steroids?+
No study found compares MGF or PEG-MGF with steroids, so this page cannot say. What is known: the FDA found no human exposure data for PEG-MGF and warns of a significant risk of immune reactions with compounded forms.
Where to inject MGF peptide?+
No medical source gives an injection site for MGF. The only route on record is from bodybuilding forums, as reported in a 2026 review: under the skin or into muscle. Those forum reports were never tested in a human study.
What is growth hormone peptide therapy?+
It is a loose term for peptides said to act on the growth hormone and IGF-1 pathway. A 2026 review ranked such peptides by evidence. PEG-MGF, IGF-1 LR3 and CJC-1295 without DAC sit in its lowest tier, with no peer-reviewed human studies.
What are the potential health benefits of IGF peptide?+
For MGF, the possible benefits are lab and animal ideas, not proven effects. MGF has been tested in animals as a possible treatment for muscular dystrophy and for brain injury from low oxygen. In muscle cells in a dish, it raised the number of progenitor cells. None of this has been shown in people.
What do synthetic peptides mean?+
A synthetic peptide is made in a lab rather than by the body. MGF is an example: it is a lab-made copy of a 24 amino acid stretch of an IGF-I form. A 2010 review notes that no matching peptide has ever been found in cells, animal tissue or body fluids.
