Can I Drink Alcohol on Wegovy? What the Label Says

Can I drink alcohol on Wegovy? The Wegovy label gives no drinking guidance: no limit, no ban and no warning about alcohol. What the label does warn about is pancreatitis, and the NIDDK, a US health institute, lists heavy alcohol use among its most common causes. The Ozempic and Zepbound labels also say nothing about drinking. Trials have tested semaglutide in heavy drinkers, and this page sets out what they found.

This page does not say drinking on Wegovy is safe or unsafe. No source we found tested that. Whether alcohol fits your situation is a question for your prescriber.

Short answer

Does the Wegovy label allow or ban drinking?
Neither. The Wegovy label gives no drinking guidance: no limit, no ban and no warning about alcohol.
Which label warning relates most to alcohol?
The Wegovy label warns about acute pancreatitis. The NIDDK lists heavy alcohol use among the most common causes of pancreatitis.
What else in the label touches on drinking?
The Wegovy label links nausea, vomiting and diarrhea to dehydration. The label reports severe stomach and bowel side effects in 4.1% of patients on Wegovy injection, against 0.9% on placebo.
Has drinking on Wegovy been tested?
Not in people using Wegovy for weight. Trials in people with alcohol use disorder found less drinking on some measures.

Does the Wegovy label say I can drink?

It does not say either way. We searched the full text of the Wegovy, Ozempic and Zepbound labels for the word alcohol and found no drinking rule.

  • It appears as alcohol swabs, used to clean the skin.
  • It appears inside the word nonalcoholic, in the name of a liver disease (MASH, once called NASH).
  • It appears as benzyl alcohol, an ingredient in Zepbound.

None of these is a rule about drinking. So any site that says the label allows or bans drinking is going past what the label says.

Which Wegovy warnings matter if I drink?

The Wegovy label has four warnings that relate to drinking: pancreatitis, dehydration from stomach side effects, shared side effects and slower stomach emptying. No source we found tested Wegovy and alcohol together.

Does alcohol raise the risk of pancreatitis on Wegovy?

No source we found measured that. What we have are two separate facts, plus one line from another GLP-1 label.

First, the Wegovy label warns that acute pancreatitis has been seen in patients treated with GLP-1 drugs, including Wegovy. That includes fatal and non-fatal severe forms. Pancreatitis is swelling of the pancreas.

Second, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases lists the most common causes of acute and chronic pancreatitis. Heavy alcohol use is on that list, along with gallstones, genetic disorders of the pancreas and some medicines.

Third, the label for Victoza, a different GLP-1 drug, notes that some patients with pancreatitis had other risk factors, such as a history of gallstones or alcohol abuse. That is a note about those patients. It is not a measured risk for people who drink on Wegovy.

Could alcohol add to Wegovy side effects?

No study has tested that. Several common Wegovy side effects, such as nausea, vomiting and headache, also appear on a US list of what alcohol can do when mixed with certain medicines.

The Wegovy label lists these among its most common side effects, each seen in at least 5% of patients: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, dysesthesia (odd skin feelings), headache, fatigue, dyspepsia (indigestion) and dizziness. The label names more at that 5% mark, such as bloating, burping, gas, acid reflux and hair loss. The label reports severe stomach and bowel side effects in 4.1% of patients on Wegovy injection and 0.9% on placebo.

Separately, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism says mixing alcohol with certain medicines can cause nausea and vomiting, headaches, drowsiness, fainting, or loss of coordination. That page does not name Wegovy. The overlap is in the symptoms, not in any tested result.

Our GLP-1 side effects guide covers the full lists.

Will alcohol hit me differently on Wegovy?

No source we found shows that. The Wegovy label says the drug delays gastric emptying, meaning food leaves the stomach more slowly.

The label says this may affect how other oral medicines are absorbed. It does not mention alcohol. One alcohol trial below measured drinking in a lab, but it did not tie its results to stomach emptying.

How long after my Wegovy pill can I have a drink?

The Wegovy label has only a timing rule that covers every drink: after taking a tablet, wait at least 30 minutes before eating food, drinking beverages or taking other oral medicines. That rule is about the tablet, not about alcohol.

Will Wegovy make me want to drink less?

Several trials tested semaglutide as a treatment for alcohol use disorder, and some found less drinking on some measures but no change on others. None tested casual drinking in people using Wegovy for weight.

  • JAMA Psychiatry, 2025, adults with alcohol use disorder: low-dose semaglutide cut the amount of alcohol drunk in a lab drinking task after treatment. It did not change average drinks per day or the number of drinking days. It did cut drinks per drinking day.
  • Lancet, 2026, alcohol use disorder with obesity: heavy drinking days fell by 41.1 percentage points from baseline on semaglutide, against 26.4 on placebo. Side effects were short-lived, mostly mild to moderate stomach effects, and more common on semaglutide.
  • American Journal of Psychiatry, 2026, oral semaglutide: no significant drop in lab-measured craving or in drinks per day against placebo. It did cut heavy drinking days.
  • A 2025 review of three randomized trials found semaglutide reduced alcohol use.
  • A 2023 study of people with obesity on semaglutide or tirzepatide found lower self-reported alcohol intake, fewer drinks per episode and lower binge drinking odds. This was self-reported, not a controlled trial.
  • Animal study: in male and female rats, semaglutide cut alcohol intake and prevented relapse-like drinking. Rat results may not carry over to people.

These results answer a different question. They suggest semaglutide may cut drinking in heavy drinkers. They do not say whether drinking is safe while on the drug.

Can you drink alcohol on Ozempic, Zepbound or Mounjaro?

The Ozempic, Zepbound and Mounjaro labels have no drinking rule either. Ozempic holds the same drug as Wegovy, while Zepbound and Mounjaro hold tirzepatide.

The only tirzepatide alcohol data we found is the self-reported 2023 study above. For how these drugs differ, see Wegovy vs Ozempic.

Common questions

Can I drink alcohol while taking Wegovy?+

The Wegovy label gives no drinking guidance: no limit, no ban and no warning. In the label text we searched, the word alcohol shows up only in alcohol swabs and in the name of a liver disease. Whether drinking fits a given person is a question for their prescriber.

Can you drink alcohol with Ozempic?+

The Ozempic label also gives no rule or warning about drinking. Ozempic and Wegovy contain the same drug, semaglutide.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Mounjaro?+

The Mounjaro and Zepbound labels have no statement about drinking. A 2023 survey study of people with obesity, which included tirzepatide users, reported lower self-reported drinking.

What are the side effects of Wegovy?+

The Wegovy label lists nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, dysesthesia, headache, fatigue, dyspepsia and dizziness among its most common side effects, each seen in at least 5% of patients. The label names more reactions at that 5% mark, such as bloating, burping, gas, acid reflux and hair loss.

Can I lose 20 lbs in 2 months on Wegovy?+

No source gives that for one person. The trials report group averages at set weeks, not a path for one person. Our page on how long Wegovy takes to work covers the trial timeline.

What is the 20 minute rule for alcohol?+

No clinical source we found defines or tests a 20 minute rule, so this page does not explain one.

Is alcohol bad while cutting?+

No source we used answers this for people on Wegovy, so this page does not judge it.

What are some healthy alcoholic drinks?+

No official clinical source names any, and this page does not rank drinks.
