Wegovy vs Ozempic: What's the Difference for Weight Loss?
Wegovy vs Ozempic is a label question, not a drug question. Both contain the same drug, semaglutide. Wegovy is approved for weight reduction. Ozempic is approved for blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes. The two labels also differ in ages, top doses and extra uses. This page lays them side by side, then shows how the daily drug liraglutide (Saxenda, Victoza) compares.
Everything here comes from FDA labels and published trials. It describes what they say. It is not advice on which one to use.
Are Ozempic and Wegovy the same drug?
Yes, the drug inside is the same. Both labels say the product contains semaglutide, a human GLP-1 receptor agonist, also called a GLP-1 analog.
What differs is what each label is approved for, who it is approved for, and the doses it lists. A label is the FDA's approved rulebook for one product. So two products with the same drug can still have very different rules.

What conditions does semaglutide treat?
Between the two labels, semaglutide covers weight, the heart, the liver, blood sugar and the kidneys. The two brands overlap on lowering heart risk, but otherwise each covers a different part of that list.
The Wegovy label lists these uses:
- To reduce excess body weight and keep it off long term, in adults and children aged 12 and older with obesity, and in adults with overweight who have at least one weight-related health problem
- To lower the risk of major heart events (heart death, heart attack or stroke) in adults with heart disease and either obesity or overweight
- To treat a liver disease called MASH (once called NASH) with moderate to advanced liver scarring, without cirrhosis, under accelerated approval
The Ozempic label lists these uses:
- Along with diet and exercise, to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes
- To lower the risk of major heart events (heart death, heart attack or stroke) in adults with type 2 diabetes and established heart disease
- To lower the risk of lasting kidney decline, end-stage kidney disease and heart death in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease
Weight loss is not on the Ozempic list. The Ozempic label also says safety and efficacy have not been established in children.

How do Wegovy and Ozempic doses differ?
The Wegovy label goes higher, with a step up to 7.2 mg allowed in some cases. The Ozempic label picks its doses by blood sugar control, at 0.5 mg, 1 mg or 2 mg.
The FDA label for Wegovy lists, for weight reduction in adults:
- Injection maintenance: 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg once weekly (2.4 mg recommended)
- Injection, for people who tolerate 2.4 mg for at least 4 weeks and need more weight reduction: up to a maximum of 7.2 mg once weekly
- Tablet maintenance: 25 mg once daily

The FDA label for Ozempic lists:
- Maintenance: 0.5 mg, 1 mg or 2 mg once weekly, based on glycemic control

Which works better for weight loss?
No head to head trial of the two brands was found. Each one was tested against placebo, not against the other.
For weight, the main trial is STEP 1. It tested weekly semaglutide in adults with overweight or obesity. STEP 1 reported that by week 68, the average change in body weight was -14.9% with semaglutide and -2.4% with placebo.
Those are trial averages. They are not a promise for any one person. How fast changes show up is covered in how long Wegovy takes to start working.

Can Wegovy and Ozempic be taken together?
The Wegovy label says using Wegovy tablets or injection with other semaglutide products, or with any other GLP-1 receptor agonist, is not recommended. Ozempic is a semaglutide product, so the rule covers it.

Why are people stopping Wegovy?
The Wegovy label reports how many trial patients stopped because of side effects. Stomach problems led the list.
The FDA label for Wegovy reports, from its clinical trials:
| Stopped for good because of | Wegovy | Placebo |
|---|---|---|
| Any side effect (2.4 mg injection) | 6.8% | 3.2% |
| Nausea | 1.8% | 0.2% |
| Vomiting | 1.2% | 0% |
| Diarrhea | 0.7% | 0.1% |
The label does not track cost, supply or other reasons people stop outside a trial. For the side effects themselves, see our GLP-1 side effects guide.

Is Ozempic safe?
The label does not give a yes or no. It lists warnings that a prescriber weighs for each person.
One warning stands out. The Ozempic label says that in rodents, semaglutide causes thyroid C-cell tumors at exposures that matter in the clinic, and the risk grows with dose and time. The label also says safety and efficacy have not been established in children. This page does not judge whether any one person should take it.

Is there a new weight loss pill?
The Wegovy label now covers a once-daily tablet as well as the weekly shot.
The label says to take Wegovy tablets once a day on an empty stomach in the morning, with water, up to 4 ounces. In the OASIS 4 trial of oral semaglutide, average weight change by week 64 was -13.6%, against -2.2% on placebo.
Other options people look at are covered in Ozempic alternatives.

How do doctors choose between Wegovy and Ozempic?
No official source we found describes how doctors choose Ozempic over Wegovy in practice. The labels describe each product's approved uses, ages and doses, shown above, but not how a prescriber decides between the two brands.
Cost and insurance are not in any clinical source we used.
How does liraglutide (Saxenda, Victoza) compare with semaglutide?
Liraglutide is a daily shot. Semaglutide is a weekly shot, and Wegovy also comes as a once-daily tablet. In the STEP 8 and SUSTAIN 10 head to head trials, weekly semaglutide lowered weight and blood sugar more.
Saxenda vs Wegovy
Saxenda is the weight version of liraglutide, the way Wegovy is for semaglutide. The Saxenda label covers adults and children aged 12 and older who weigh more than 60 kg and have obesity, and adults with overweight plus at least one weight-related condition. It is injected under the skin of the belly, thigh or upper arm once a day, at any time, with or without meals.
The FDA label for Saxenda lists this daily step-up:
- Week 1: 0.6 mg
- Week 2: 1.2 mg
- Week 3: 1.8 mg
- Week 4: 2.4 mg
- Week 5 onward: 3 mg
- If more than 3 days pass since the last dose: restart at 0.6 mg daily
Disclaimer: this is label information, not a recommendation. Dose decisions belong with a licensed clinician who knows your history.
The Saxenda label also sets a check. Weight is reviewed 16 weeks after starting. If a person has not lost at least 4% of starting body weight, the label says to stop Saxenda.
The STEP 8 trial put the two side by side in adults with overweight or obesity and no diabetes. It compared weekly semaglutide with a 16-week step-up against daily liraglutide 3.0 mg with a 4-week step-up. Results:
| STEP 8 measure | Semaglutide weekly | Liraglutide daily |
|---|---|---|
| Average weight change | -15.8% | -6.4% |
| Stopped treatment for any reason | 13.5% | 27.6% |
| Reported stomach side effects | 84.1% | 82.7% |
Stomach side effects were about as common on both. But about twice as many people stopped liraglutide.
Victoza vs Ozempic
Victoza is the diabetes version of liraglutide, the way Ozempic is for semaglutide. Its label covers blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes, and lowering the risk of major heart events in adults with type 2 diabetes and established heart disease.
The FDA label for Victoza lists:
- Maximum recommended dose: 1.8 mg once daily, after at least one week on 1.2 mg once daily
Disclaimer: this is label information, not a recommendation. Dose decisions belong with a licensed clinician who knows your history.
The SUSTAIN 10 trial compared weekly semaglutide with daily liraglutide in people with type 2 diabetes. In SUSTAIN 10, HbA1c, a measure of average blood sugar, started at 8.2% and fell by 1.7% with semaglutide and by 1.0% with liraglutide. In the same trial, body weight started at 96.9 kg on average and fell by 5.8 kg with semaglutide and by 1.9 kg with liraglutide.
No trial was found that tested Saxenda against Ozempic or Wegovy for diabetes. No label gives a schedule for switching from Saxenda to a semaglutide brand.
Semaglutide has also been tested against tirzepatide. In SURMOUNT-5, average weight change at week 72 was -20.2% with tirzepatide and -13.7% with semaglutide. The full comparison is in tirzepatide vs semaglutide.
