GLP-1 Meals: What to Eat While Taking a GLP-1

GLP-1 meals should be small, with protein eaten first: fish, eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, nuts and seeds, beans, lentils and whole grains. That is the advice of a 2025 joint advisory from four US medical and nutrition groups. It says to go easy on fatty foods, large meals and alcohol.

The Zepbound and Wegovy FDA labels add one rule: the drug is used with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. The lists below show what to eat and what to limit, by the record that says it.

Short answer

How big each meal should be
Smaller and more often. The advisory describes a small breakfast, then small meals every 3 to 4 hours, with enough fluids.
What to put first on the plate
Protein. The advisory says protein-rich foods can be eaten first in a meal, and names fish, eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and nuts or seeds.
What to go easy on
Fatty and high fiber foods in the first few days, large or high-fat meals, and alcohol, which the advisory says may worsen nausea and reflux.

What to eat and what to limit on a GLP-1

Eat small meals with protein first, and go easy on fat, big portions and alcohol. Each line below comes from the 2025 joint advisory, Nutritional priorities to support GLP-1 therapy for obesity (Obesity, PMC12304835).

What to eat and what to limit, from the joint Advisory Nutritional priorities to support GLP-1 therapy for obesity (Obesity, August 2025, PMC12304835).
StepWhat the advisory says
Eat: protein firstProtein-rich foods can be eaten first in a meal, so you are more likely to get enough.
Eat: small-volume proteinFish, eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and nuts or seeds, including peanut or almond butter.
Eat: plant foods and lean proteinBeans, peas, lentils, whole grains, dairy, seafood, eggs and lean poultry.
Eat: watery fruits and vegetablesFoods with more water, fewer calories and a lower glycemic index, such as certain fruits and vegetables, can help the stomach empty faster.
Eat: fiber and fluidsEnough fluids and fiber from foods, because constipation is common with weight loss.
How: small mealsA small breakfast, then small meals every 3 to 4 hours, while drinking enough fluids.
Limit: fat and fiber at the startAvoid fatty or high fiber foods during the first few days of treatment.
Limit: large or high-fat mealsAvoiding large or high-fat meals can help with diarrhea.
Limit: alcoholAlcohol may worsen nausea and reflux on GLP-1 therapy and should be minimized.

What the GLP-1 labels say about food

The labels say very little about food. Both the Zepbound and Wegovy FDA labels say the drug is used together with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.

On timing, the Zepbound FDA label says:

Once weekly, at any time of day, with or without meals.

Disclaimer: this is label information, not a recommendation. Decisions about your own medicine belong with a licensed clinician.

So the labels do not tell you what to eat. The detail on this page comes from the 2025 joint advisory by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, the American Society for Nutrition, the Obesity Medicine Association and The Obesity Society. It is expert guidance, not a trial.

How a GLP-1 changes what and how much you eat

In a 2017 trial in adults with obesity, people on semaglutide ate 24% less in total across the test meals than people on placebo. They also reported less hunger and fewer cravings.

In that trial, people could eat as much as they wanted at lunch, the evening meal and snacks. Semaglutide led to less food at each one. The study also found better control of eating and a lower preference for high-fat foods.

That is why meal quality matters. When you eat less, each bite has to carry more of your nutrients. The advisory names nutritional deficiencies due to calorie reduction, and muscle and bone loss, among the issues it covers.

What should I eat on my first day of GLP-1?

Small meals, with fatty and high fiber foods kept low. The advisory says smaller, more frequent meals and avoiding fatty or high fiber foods during the first few days of treatment can help ease symptoms.

The reason is nausea. The advisory says nausea is the most common stomach side effect, and that it often comes in the morning or after longer periods without eating.

No label sets a food rule for day one. For the dose steps on each drug, see the semaglutide dosage chart and the tirzepatide dosage guide.

Meal size and timing on a GLP-1

The advisory describes a small breakfast, then small meals every 3 to 4 hours, while drinking enough fluids. This spacing avoids the long gaps without food that it links to nausea.

It also says to avoid large or high-fat meals, which can help with diarrhea. A smaller plate is the common thread across all its advice.

Fluids come up again and again. The advisory says constipation is common with weight loss, and that enough fluids and fiber from foods should be encouraged.

Why protein comes first in a GLP-1 meal

Eating protein first makes it more likely you get enough before you feel full. The advisory says protein can be hard to get on a GLP-1 because of lower appetite or taste aversions.

On how much protein, the joint advisory reports:

Higher targets, such as 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg of body weight per day, have been proposed during active weight loss.

Disclaimer: this is a target proposed in published guidance, not a recommendation for you. Your own needs belong with a licensed clinician or dietitian.

Protein is not the whole answer. The advisory says more protein alone is likely not enough to keep muscle without structured strength training.

For protein sources and amounts in general, see our protein guide.

GLP-1 meal ideas: the foods the advisory names

The advisory names food groups, not recipes. Build meals from small-volume protein foods, beans and whole grains, dairy, seafood, eggs, lean poultry, and watery fruits and vegetables.

Foods named in the 2025 joint nutrition advisory on GLP-1 therapy (Obesity, PMC12304835), grouped by why it names them.
Food groupExamples it namesWhy it is on the list
Protein foods that are small in volumeFish, eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, nuts and seeds, and spreads such as peanut or almond butterThe advisory names these because protein can be hard to eat enough of when appetite is low.
Plant foodsBeans, peas, lentils, whole grainsListed by the advisory as foods that should generally be encouraged.
Other protein and dairyDairy, seafood, eggs, lean poultryAlso on the advisory list of foods to generally encourage.
Foods with more waterCertain fruits and vegetablesThe advisory says foods that flow easily, have fewer calories, a lower glycemic index and more water can help the stomach empty faster.

A simple way to read the table: start with one item from the first row, add one from the second or third, and keep portions small. That is a reading of the advisory, not a tested meal plan.

Matching meals to common stomach side effects

For each common stomach side effect, the advisory gives a food step. The table puts them side by side.

Stomach side effects and the food advice for each, from the 2025 joint nutrition advisory on GLP-1 therapy (Obesity, PMC12304835).
Side effectWhat the advisory says about itFood advice it gives
NauseaOften in the morning or after long gaps without eatingSmaller, more frequent meals. Avoid fatty or high fiber foods in the first few days. A small breakfast, then small meals every 3 to 4 hours, with enough fluids.
DiarrheaCan also occurAvoid large or high-fat meals.
ConstipationCommon with weight lossEnough fluids and fiber from foods. The advisory says long constipation can also lead to reactive diarrhea.
Nausea and refluxCan be made worse by alcoholThe advisory says alcohol should be kept to a minimum.

Low glycemic foods on a GLP-1

The advisory says foods with a lower glycemic index can help the stomach empty faster. So can foods that flow easily, have fewer calories and hold more water, such as certain fruits and vegetables.

The advisory gives no list of low-glycemic meals. It names the food traits, and the food groups in the table above.

Foods and drinks the advisory says to limit

Three things: fatty or high fiber foods in the first few days, large or high-fat meals, and alcohol.

Alcohol: the advisory says alcohol use may worsen nausea and gastroesophageal reflux with GLP-1 therapy, and should be minimized.

Fiber needs a note. The advisory says to avoid high fiber foods in the first few days, and later says fiber from foods should be encouraged for constipation. Read together, that is less fiber at the very start, then more.

What no official source gives for GLP-1 meals

No FDA label, NIH page or study we found gives a GLP-1 meal plan, a recipe list or a named diet rule.

A 7 day meal plan or recipes

The advisory gives food groups and a meal pattern only. A set menu found online is not tested guidance from these sources.

The "3-3-3 rule"

We found no FDA, NIH or peer-reviewed source that defines it, so we do not explain it here.

Calorie numbers for you

The label indication lines say "reduced-calorie diet" without a number. A personal target is a question for a clinician or dietitian.

GLP-1 meal questions

What should I eat on my first day of GLP-1?+

The FDA labels give no food rule for the first day. A 2025 joint nutrition advisory says smaller, more frequent meals and avoiding fatty or high fiber foods during the first few days can help ease symptoms. It also says people can be counseled to eat a small breakfast, then small meals every 3 to 4 hours while drinking enough fluids.

What are some examples of low-glycemic load meals?+

The advisory does not list low-glycemic meals. It says foods with a lower glycemic index, fewer calories, a thinner texture and more water, such as certain fruits and vegetables, can help the stomach empty faster. It also encourages beans, peas, lentils, whole grains, dairy, seafood, eggs and lean poultry.

What are some healthy meals I can eat to help with weight loss?+

The advisory gives food groups, not set meals. It suggests small-volume protein foods such as fish, eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese and nuts or seeds, eaten first in the meal, plus beans, peas, lentils, whole grains, dairy, seafood and lean poultry. The Zepbound and Wegovy labels both say the drug is used with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.

Do you take a GLP-1 with food?+

For Zepbound, the FDA label says to give the weekly injection at any time of day, with or without meals. Disclaimer: this is label information, not a recommendation. Decisions about your own medicine belong with a licensed clinician.

How much protein should you eat on a GLP-1?+

The advisory says higher protein targets, such as 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg of body weight per day, have been proposed during active weight loss. It also says protein alone is likely not enough to keep muscle without structured strength training. Your own target is a question for a clinician or dietitian.

Can you drink alcohol on a GLP-1?+

The advisory says alcohol may worsen nausea and gastroesophageal reflux with GLP-1 therapy and should be minimized.
