Ozempic Burps: Why Sulfur Burps Happen on Semaglutide

Ozempic burps are a listed side effect: belching was reported by up to 2.7% of people on Ozempic in its label trials, against 0% on placebo. Why some burps smell of sulfur is not known. A 2025 review lists three ideas and says direct evidence is lacking.

Below: what the Ozempic, Wegovy and Zepbound labels say about belching, the rates by dose, the three ideas about the cause, and what published guidance says may help with stomach symptoms.

Short answer

Is it a real side effect?
Yes. The Ozempic label lists eructation (belching). The Wegovy label lists belching among its most common side effects.
Why the sulfur smell
Unproven. A 2025 review names slowed stomach emptying, gut bacterial overgrowth and sulfur in food as ideas, and says direct evidence is lacking.
How long it lasts
No source gives a time. Stomach side effects in general are more likely at the start and when the dose goes up, says a 2025 joint advisory.
What the label says to do
Talk to your healthcare provider about any side effect that bothers you or does not go away.

Is burping a side effect of Ozempic?

Yes. The Ozempic label lists eructation, the medical word for belching, in its trial side effect data.

Wegovy is also semaglutide. Its label lists belching among the most common side effects in adults and children aged 12 and older, together with nausea, stomach pain, dizziness, gas, diarrhea, feeling bloated, vomiting and headache.

It is not only a semaglutide effect. The Zepbound (tirzepatide) patient information also lists belching, next to nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, indigestion and heartburn.

Belching is not one of the most frequent stomach effects, though. A 2025 network meta-analysis of GLP-1 drugs in people with overweight or obesity but no diabetes found nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation were the most common. The 2025 joint advisory puts belching among the less common side effects, with dyspepsia, fatigue, headache, hair loss and reflux.

Ozempic belching rates by dose

In the Ozempic label's trial data, belching was reported by 2.7% on the lower dose and 1.1% on the higher dose, against 0% on placebo. Indigestion (dyspepsia) followed a similar pattern.

One detail most pages miss: in these figures, belching was less common on the higher dose, not more. The 2025 advisory says higher doses are generally more likely to provoke stomach side effects. For belching in this label table, that pattern did not hold. Two numbers cannot explain why.

Why do sulfur burps happen on semaglutide?

The cause is not proven. A 2025 review in Obesity Pillars says the hypotheses include delayed gastric emptying from the medicine, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and dietary sulfur load, but that direct evidence is lacking.

The same review describes sulfur burps as belching with a hydrogen sulfide smell. It says they warrant mechanistic investigation, which means the cause still needs to be studied.

The term also appears in earlier work. A 2024 Obesity Pillars review says most stomach side effects centered on nausea and diarrhea, as well as eructation, which it calls "sulfur burps" in quotes.

The three ideas about the cause, and how far each is proven

None of the three ideas has direct evidence behind it yet. The table shows what each one rests on.

Proposed causes of sulfur burps, from the 2025 Obesity Pillars review (PMC12661421), with the label and advisory facts each idea leans on.
IdeaWhat it rests onStatus
Food sits longer in a slowed stomachThe Ozempic label says semaglutide delays gastric emptying, and the advisory says this leads to bloating, fullness and nausea.Proposed, not proven as the cause of sulfur burps
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)Named as a hypothesis in the 2025 Obesity Pillars review.Proposed, not proven
Sulfur load from foodNamed as a hypothesis in the same review.Proposed, not proven

The slowed stomach is the best documented part. The Ozempic label says the drug delays gastric emptying and may change how other medicines taken by mouth are absorbed. The Zepbound label says the same about tirzepatide.

The joint advisory says delayed gastric emptying leads to bloating, fullness and nausea. It does not tie it to sulfur burps. That link is still a hypothesis.

How long do sulfur burps last on Ozempic?

No label, trial or review we found gives a number of days or weeks. The closest guide is timing: the 2025 joint advisory says stomach side effects are generally more likely when a GLP-1 is started or the dose is raised.

The Ozempic FDA label sets a slow start for that reason. It states:

The Ozempic label's starting dose is 0.25 mg injected under the skin once weekly for 4 weeks, then the dose steps up. The label says this is to reduce the risk of stomach side effects.

How do you get rid of Ozempic burps?

No study has tested a remedy for GLP-1 burps. The only published food guidance is for stomach symptoms in general, from the 2025 joint advisory.

  • Smaller, more frequent meals, and avoiding fatty or high fiber foods during the first few days of treatment, can help ease symptoms.
  • Ginger or peppermint tea, as well as acupressure bands, can be beneficial.

The advisory does not say these steps were tested on burps. Antacids and other remedies have not been tested for GLP-1 burps in any source we found.

For the full meal guidance, see GLP-1 meals. If burps come with a burning chest, our page on whether Zepbound causes heartburn covers reflux on these drugs.

When the Ozempic label says to call a provider

The label says to talk to your healthcare provider about any side effect that bothers you or does not go away. It names severe stomach pain that will not go away as a warning sign of pancreatitis.

The Ozempic patient information says: stop using Ozempic and call your healthcare provider right away if you have severe pain in your stomach area (abdomen) that will not go away. This is part of its warning about inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).

For the wider list of stomach effects, see our GLP-1 side effects guide.

Disclaimer: these are trial doses from the label, not a recommendation. Dose decisions belong with a licensed clinician.

Why does Ozempic cause sulfur burps?+

No one has shown why. A 2025 review lists three ideas: delayed gastric emptying from the medicine, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, and sulfur load from food. It says direct evidence is lacking.

How long will sulfur burps last on Ozempic?+

No label, trial or review we found gives a time for how long belching or sulfur burps last. A 2025 joint advisory says stomach side effects in general are more likely when a GLP-1 is started or the dose is raised.

How do you get rid of Ozempic burps?+

No study has tested a remedy for GLP-1 burps. For stomach symptoms at the start of treatment, a 2025 joint advisory says smaller, more frequent meals and avoiding fatty or high fiber foods during the first few days can help. It also says ginger or peppermint tea and acupressure bands can be beneficial.

How to stop Ozempic sulfur burps?+

The Ozempic label does not give a way to stop them. It says to talk to your healthcare provider about any side effect that bothers you or does not go away. The label also uses a slow dose start to reduce the risk of stomach side effects.

Does Wegovy cause burping too?+

Yes. Wegovy is also semaglutide, and its label lists belching among the most common side effects in adults and children aged 12 and older, along with nausea, stomach pain, gas and feeling bloated.
