Hospitals in Hanoi for Foreigners: What to Check

Hospitals in Hanoi are named on three foreign government lists: the US Embassy list, the UK Foreign Office list updated on 24 June 2022, and the Australian Embassy list of January 2026. The Australian list rates English as fluent at Hanoi French Hospital, Vinmec Times City and Vinmec Smart City. It rates English as limited or very limited at every Hanoi hospital it marks as a state hospital. The UK and Australian governments say plainly they endorse no name on their lists, and the US Embassy says it takes no responsibility for the facilities it names and that its list is not complete. This guide sets the lists side by side, shows where they disagree, and explains how to check a hospital with the Hanoi Department of Health.

Short answer

Which Hanoi hospitals do the lists rate fluent in English?
The Australian list (January 2026) rates Hanoi French Hospital, Vinmec Times City and Vinmec Smart City as fluent. The US Embassy puts Hanoi French Hospital and Vinmec Times City in its international section.
Is any Hanoi hospital JCI accredited?
The JCI directory we checked on 13 October 2026 lists Vinmec International Hospital, Times City, Hanoi, accredited under the Hospital Program from 25 April 2015.
What number is the ambulance?
115, says the US State Department. Smartraveller warns that doctors and hospitals expect payment before they treat you, even in an emergency.
How do you check a Hanoi clinic?
By law a clinic needs an operating licence. The Hanoi Department of Health runs lookups for private medical facilities and practising certificates, in Vietnamese.

Which hospitals do official lists name in Hanoi?

Three governments publish a Hanoi list, and each one names a different set of hospitals and clinics. The UK and Australian lists each say plainly that they endorse nothing on them; the US Embassy says it takes no responsibility for the facilities it names.

The US Embassy list has no date. We read it in October 2026. It sorts Hanoi into four groups. The first is international clinics and hospitals: Family Medical Practice Hanoi, Hanoi French Hospital, Raffles Medical Hanoi and Vinmec Times City. The second is private hospitals: Hong Ngoc, Tam Anh and Thu Cuc. The list notes that Hong Ngoc has eight hospitals and clinics in its chain. The third is public hospitals, and it names seven: Army Hospital 108, Bach Mai, Saint Paul, E Hospital, Viet Duc, Vietnam-Cuba and Vietnam-Soviet Friendship. The fourth is specialized hospitals. Among them are Hanoi Heart Hospital, K Hospital (the National Cancer Institute), the National Children's Hospital, the National Lung Hospital and the National Institute of Ophthalmology.

The Embassy takes no responsibility for the skill or reputation of anyone on the list. It says the list is not complete. It says many of the international sites have foreign doctors on staff who speak English. It also says care in Vietnam is generally below US standards.

The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) list was last updated on 24 June 2022. Each row has a column for English speaking staff, with answers such as yes, some or few, and a column for public or private. The FCDO says none of the providers is endorsed or recommended by it.

The Australian Embassy list is dated January 2026. It gives each Hanoi entry a languages line and a speciality line. It says DFAT compiled it from public information and does not endorse any of the services on it. It also gives no guarantee that the list is current.

English at Hanoi hospitals: how each list rates it

The UK and Australian lists both rate English, but they do not always agree. So the table below shows each list's own words, in its own column, for every Hanoi entry on the UK or Australian list. The US column shows which section of the US list names the place, since the US list gives no English rating.

English level and listing for Hanoi hospitals and clinics, by list. Built by Peptides Vietnam from the US Embassy Medical Assistance page (undated, read October 2026), the UK FCDO list (updated 24 June 2022) and the Australian Embassy list (January 2026). Names follow the Australian list unless only the UK list has the entry. Inclusion is not an endorsement: the UK and Australian governments say they endorse no facility on their lists, the US Embassy takes no responsibility for the facilities it names, and neither do we.

The Australian list also has a speciality line. For Hanoi French Hospital and both Vinmec hospitals, it says "international standards". It says all three include trauma, maternity and gynaecology. Those are the list's words, not our rating. It marks Saint Paul, Viet Duc and Bach Mai as having a trauma centre. It says 108 Military Central Hospital includes trauma.

Three public hospitals are only on the US list. They are E Hospital, Vietnam-Cuba Hospital and Vietnam-Soviet Friendship Hospital. We did not find Thanh Nhan Hospital on the UK or Australian lists, or in the US sections we read.

Where the Hanoi lists disagree

The lists clash on English at one big state hospital, on one street number, and on some addresses. When they clash, the hospital itself is the one to ask.

  • English at Viet Duc. The UK list marks Viet Duc University Hospital "yes" for English speaking staff. The Australian list says English is limited, with English speaking staff available.
  • English at Vinmec Times City. The UK list says "some". The Australian list says fluent. The UK list is the older one, from June 2022.
  • The Vinmec Times City street number. The US Embassy and UK lists both give 458 Minh Khai Street. The Australian list prints a different number. We use 458, the number two lists share.
  • Old and new place names. The UK list from 2022 uses the old district names, such as Dong Da District for Hanoi French Hospital. The US and Australian lists use the newer ward names, such as Kim Lien Ward for the same address, 1 Phuong Mai Street.
  • The two maternity hospitals. The UK list gives different street addresses from the Australian list for the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology and for Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital.

The Australian list gives no promise that its details are current. The US list says it is not complete. A call to the hospital is the surest check of an address or a language service.

Is there a JCI accredited hospital in Hanoi?

Yes. The JCI directory lists Vinmec Times City in Hanoi. We checked it on 13 October 2026, with the country set to Vietnam.

The entry names Vinmec International Hospital, Times City, Hanoi, with IHCO ID 60003397. It is under the Hospital Program. The status is accredited, from 25 April 2015.

That was the Hanoi entry in the capture we read. The page shows no total, so we give no count, and a name missing from one capture does not prove a hospital lacks accreditation. The directory is the place to check any hospital by name.

Sources: Joint Commission International, accredited organizations, Vietnam

Is FV Hospital in Hanoi?

No. Every official source we read puts FV Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, not Hanoi.

Its JCI entry gives the address as 6 Nguyen Luong Bang Street, Ho Chi Minh City. The US Embassy lists it under Ho Chi Minh City as the Franco-Vietnamese hospital, and the UK list does the same. For the south, see our guide to hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City.

Emergencies in Hanoi: 115 and the hospital lines

Dial 115 for an ambulance. The US State Department says 115 is the number for emergency medical services. The US Embassy list also gives 115 for an ambulance.

The US Embassy list gives a 24/7 emergency line for two Hanoi hospitals:

  • Hanoi French Hospital, 1 Phuong Mai Street, Kim Lien Ward: 24/7 emergency (+84 24) 3574 1111. Main line (+84 24) 3577 1100.
  • Vinmec Times City International Hospital, 458 Minh Khai Street, Vinh Tuy Ward: 24/7 emergency (+84 24) 3974 4333. Main line (+84 24) 3974 3556.

Numbers change, so check the Embassy page before you save them.

The Hanoi Department of Health also runs a page for the city's 115 system. When we checked on 14 October 2026, it carried a 115 on-call and emergency transport schedule dated that day. It is in Vietnamese. We did not confirm how often it is updated.

Do Hanoi hospitals want payment first?

Often, yes. Smartraveller says doctors and hospitals expect payment before they treat you. That includes emergencies. It says some hospitals may talk to your travel insurer to secure payment. Others may need payment up front before they start.

The US State Department strongly advises extra insurance that covers medical evacuation. If you buy it, it says, you must claim the money back from the insurer yourself.

We found no official price list for Hanoi hospitals. So this page gives no prices. For national fee rules and insurance, see our guide to healthcare in Vietnam for foreigners and our health insurance guide.

How to check a hospital or clinic in Hanoi

Check the licence first. Under Vietnam's Law on Medical Examination and Treatment, a clinic or hospital may only open once the authority has granted it an operating licence. Hanoi has its own tools to look one up.

  • The Department of Health lookup. The Hanoi Department of Health website has a menu called Tra cứu thông tin hoạt động, look up operating information. It has links for private medical facilities (cơ sở khám, chữa bệnh ngoài công lập) and for drug wholesalers and retailers.
  • The health data portal. suckhoethudo.vn calls itself the official portal of the Hanoi Department of Health. Its lookup page lets you search groups of data, among them medical facilities, practising certificates, beauty service facilities and drug retailers.
  • The phone lines. The Department prints a hotline, 024 3998 5765 or 0967 981 616, and a separate line for private medical facility matters, 0916 016 464 or 0913 546 690.

These tools are in Vietnamese. We could not test a search by script, because the results are built by script in the browser.

A Hanoi ward has warned about places that skip these steps. In January 2026, the Yen Hoa ward government said some cosmetic places in Hanoi were working without a licence. It told people to choose only licensed places. It said to check that the sign shows the licence number and the name of the person in charge. It also said to ask to see the doctor's practising certificate. Our plastic surgery guide covers that topic in more depth.

Malaria and air quality in Hanoi

The US CDC lists malaria transmission as none in the city of Hanoi. The same line covers Da Nang, Hai Phong, Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang and Quy Nhon. That line is about those cities only; the CDC page covers the rest of the country.

Air is the other city issue official advice raises. The UK FCDO says smog and other air pollution can be hazardous in urban areas, and that levels can change quickly. Its guidance links to an air quality page for Hanoi.

If you need medicine during your stay, our pharmacy in Vietnam guide explains what a shop may sell without a prescription. For drips sold by clinics in the city, see IV drips in Hanoi.

What we could and could not confirm

We built this page from written records in October 2026. We did not visit a hospital. What we could confirm:

  • The Hanoi rows of the US Embassy, UK FCDO and Australian Embassy lists: the UK list updated 24 June 2022, the Australian list of January 2026, and the US page, which carries no date. The US page and the JCI directory were read in a browser.
  • The JCI entry for Vinmec Times City, as shown on 13 October 2026.
  • The Hanoi Department of Health menu, phone lines and 115 page, and the licence rule in Law 15/2023.
  • The advice from Smartraveller, the US State Department, the US CDC and the UK FCDO quoted above.

What we could not confirm:

  • Any ranking of Hanoi hospitals. No official source we read ranks them.
  • Prices. We found no official Hanoi hospital price schedule, and we do not use hospital or broker prices.
  • Whether any Hanoi hospital other than Vinmec Times City holds JCI accreditation. We can only report the entry we saw.
  • A search result in the Department of Health lookup for a named hospital, since the results are built in the browser.
  • Anything the Hanoi Department of Health says about foreign patients in particular. We found nothing on that.
  • Which Vinmec Times City street number is right. Two lists say 458.

Hospitals in other Vietnamese cities

Each city has its own lists and gaps. See hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang hospitals, Hoi An hospitals and Phu Quoc hospitals. How the whole system works is in our healthcare in Vietnam guide.
